Check Valve Disc Sticking Troubleshooting: Cleaning and Lubrication
A sticking check valve disc can cause backflow or abnormal system pressure. Common causes include debris buildup, scale formation, dried lubricant, or spring failure. The primary solutions are cleaning and lubrication.

1. Disassembly and Inspection
Close the isolation valves on both sides of the check valve, depressurize the system, and drain the medium. Remove the valve cover and take out the disc assembly. Inspect the guide stem and guide bushing inner wall for foreign material or scratches. Check the spring for deformation or breakage.
2. Cleaning Methods
Use the appropriate cleaning method based on the type of deposit:
Oil or dust: Brush with kerosene or diesel, wipe with a soft cloth, and blow dry with compressed air.
Scale or crystals: Soak the disc in 5%-10% citric acid or dilute acetic acid for 30-60 minutes, rinse with clean water, and blow dry.
Heavy oil or gum: Soak in a specialized industrial cleaner, using an ultrasonic cleaner if necessary.Check Valve News
Important: Never use a steel file or sandpaper on the sealing surface, as this will destroy the seal.
3. Lubrication Procedure Check Valve Suppliers
After cleaning and thorough drying, apply a thin, even layer of grease to the guide stem and the inner wall of the guide bushing. For room-temperature water applications, use food-grade white oil or silicone grease. For high-temperature steam, use molybdenum disulfide grease. Manually move the disc back and forth 3-5 times to distribute the lubricant evenly, then wipe away any excess.
Avoid over-lubrication, as excess grease may enter the pipeline and contaminate the medium. Do not mix different types of lubricants.
4. Preventive Measures
Always flush new pipelines to remove weld slag and iron filings before operation. Perform a functional test on critical check valves every 3-6 months. For scale-prone media, consider installing a water softener. For media containing particles, a swing check valve is preferred over a lift check valve.
If the disc remains stuck after cleaning and lubrication, replace the disc assembly or the entire valve.
